Based on efforts by MacArthur grantee Access to Justice, officials in the Nigerian state of Anambra will introduce legislation to require a coroner’s inquest into suspicious deaths. The announcement was made at a workshop on the topic organized by Access to Justice and the Anambra State Ministry of Justice. Access to Justice has worked to resurrect the law in states across Nigeria in an attempt to reduce extra-judicial killings, which numbered 3000 in 2004 alone. The human rights organization is a recipient of a 2009 MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions.
