The Federal Government of Nigeria recently provided its National Action Plan for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights to the United Nations Human Rights Commission in Geneva. The Plan is an audit of the human rights situation in Nigeria, identifying areas of improvement and commitment to concrete measures to strengthen human rights. The Plan covers civil and political rights; economic, social and cultural rights; the right to sustainable development, peace and protected environment; and the rights of women, children and young persons. Nigeria is among several nations that have deposited human rights plans to the UN. Governments can be held accountable for the objectives for human rights protections outlined in the plans. MacArthur supported the development of Nigeria’s National Action Plan with a grant to the National Human Rights Commission and NGOs beginning in 2001.
