Timnit Gebru has launched the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research institute (DAIR), a community-rooted institute designed to counter Big Tech’s pervasive influence on the research, development, and deployment of AI. Gebru founded the MacArthur-supported nonprofit to meet the need for independent spaces where researchers can set the agenda and conduct AI research based in their communities and lived experiences. DAIR aims to bring more public interest technologists together to further build the movement toward inclusive and equitable technology.
