The number of Nigerian states picking up their share of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Fund has grown following a convening of representatives from UBEC and state basic education boards. With support from MacArthur, the Progressive Governors Forum is providing support and assistance to states working to access their federally-allocated UBEC funding, which has been set aside by the government to eradicate illiteracy and poverty. In order to receive the funds, states must fulfill certain requirements, including disclosures of previous spending and providing matching funds. Since the meeting, three states including Lagos, a focal state in MacArthur’s work, have proceeded with fulfilling the requirements and have accessed their funds.
