Mexico’s Federal Institute for Access to Information ordered the Ministry of Defense to release information on all detentions of foreign nationals by the country’s armed forces over the past decade. The Ministry of Defense had initially denied possessing such information. In its unanimous decision, the Institute ordered that the data be classified by nationality, sex, and age of the detainees, as well as the specific date on which such detentions occurred. MacArthur grantee the Institute of Women in Migration, the first organization in Mexico to focus specifically on issues related to women in migration, provided supporting research that informed the decision.
