A new set of interactive maps, Mapping COVID-19 Equity, shows the impact of inequitable public policies and structural racism on Chicago neighborhoods and how those factors have shifted over time. The data visualization demonstrates a long history of disinvestment and segregation that drove disproportionate COVID-19 harms in Black and Latinx communities. The tool can illustrate the history, causes, and responses to inequity, and it also identifies some interventions that still need to be done. The MacArthur-supported project, in partnership with 25 foundations and public and private sector entities, aims to help center racial equity in Chicago’s recovery from the pandemic and shift funds to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and BIPOC-led organizations.
