West Papua

A small grants program is providing for mangrove planting, turtle conservation, and coral rehabilitation, among other efforts to support the conservation of marine environments in Birds Head Seascape, West Papua, Indonesia. The MacArthur-supported program, run by Conservation International, is intended to support these local conservation efforts and build conservation knowledge and capacity in an area recognized as the global epicenter of marine biodiversity. The Seascape is home to more than 1,700 fish species, and more than 600 coral species. A total of 17 initial projects were awarded grants in the first round of the program.
