The MacArthur Foundation is supporting several efforts to inform and engage the press and public in the global discourse taking place around the NATO Summit in Chicago.
- The Chicago Council on Global Affairs is hosting a speaker series, four international conferences, and a special section on its website dedicated to Summit resources. The Council is also organizing, with support from the World Economic Forum and in collaboration with USAID, the G8 Symposium on Food Security in Washington, DC. The symposium will feature significant new business commitments for African agriculture and discussions on addressing hunger and poverty in the changing development landscape.
- Community Media Workshop, working with the Council, has created a website to provide visiting international journalists with local resources, including briefing papers and sources, to support stories on Chicago’s history, culture, ethnic communities, and institutions.
- The Atlantic Council Young Leaders Forum will take place during the NATO Summit, bringing together Chicago-area university students and those representing NATO countries for shared learning on global issues. Barry Lowenkron, MacArthur’s Vice President for International Programs, will moderate a panel titled The Alliance for the Future: What Challenges, What Relevance? featuring foreign and defense ministers from several NATO member countries.
- The Chicago Council, in partnership with the Poynter Institute and DePaul University, hosted a training session to help reporters in the Midwest learn more about bringing global stories to their local audiences. Additional media briefings will focus on the Arab awakening and food insecurity.

The Brookings Institution published a background paper to help inform discussions around key issues to be addressed at both the G8 and NATO Summits. The paper frames policy briefings for the press and other interested stakeholders in the lead-up to the Summits to promote more informed discussions.
