Envisioning Justice is a two-year initiative by Illinois Humanities that uses the arts and humanities to engage Chicago residents from every neighborhood, race, ethnicity, background, and ideology in conversation about the impact of incarceration on local communities and approaches for lessening that impact. The project, supported with initial funding from MacArthur’s Safety and Justice Challenge, is oriented around “hubs” in five Chicago neighborhoods highly impacted by incarceration: Back of the Yards, Bronzeville, Little Village, North Lawndale, and Rogers Park. These hubs are creating arts education and community discussion programs to bring Chicagoans together to envision a reformed local justice system.
