Bank of America announced this month that it was changing its overdraft policy for debit cards, which is expected to save customers hundreds of millions of dollars in fees. Research and advocacy by the Center for Responsible Lending, a Foundation grantee affiliated with the North Carolina-based Center for Community Self-Help, played a leading role in spurring the policy shift. The bank’s decision comes before a new Federal Reserve rule on overdraft fees takes effect. According to the Center, banks currently collect more than $23 billion per year in overdraft fees from American customers — a cost disproportionately borne by low-income consumers. The announcement was reported by the The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and other news outlets.
