Index Shows Most Legislative Races Are Not Competitive
October 20, 2016 | From the field | Strengthening American Democracy, MacArthur Award for Creative & Effective Institutions

An interactive index analyzes the competitiveness of federal and state legislative races in all 50 states. The tool allows journalists, policymakers, and citizens to analyze the competitiveness of races from a variety of perspectives, such as voter demographics and campaign fundraising. The index, which was created by the National Institute on Money in State Politics, finds that very few legislative races in the nation are truly competitive. The Institute, a recipient of the MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions, houses the nation’s only free, nonpartisan, verifiable archive of campaign contributions for all 50 states.
