The National Legal Aid & Defender Association (the Association) is the oldest and largest nonprofit Association devoted to the delivery of legal services for those who cannot afford legal representation. The Association has helped advance the cause for equal access to justice at the national, state, and local levels through advocacy, training, and technical assistance for civil legal aid and indigent defenders for more than a century. The Association values the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and incorporates a commitment to racial justice within its own organization as well as in the larger justice community. This award supports the Association's continued participation as a strategic ally in the Safety and Justice Challenge, the Foundation's criminal justice reform initiative aimed at reducing over-incarceration and racial disparities by targeting the misuse and overuse of jails. As a strategic ally, the Association convenes leadership summits to connect and cultivate defense leaders participating in the Safety and Justice Challenge Network sites, uses multiple communication channels to disseminate information on jail reduction efforts to its members and the general public, and collaborates with other strategic allies to build momentum toward systems reform to eliminate the misuse and overuse of jails.
