South Saharan Social Development Organization (South Saharan) is a Nigerian-based non-profit organization, established in 2001. The organization's education program provides girls and boys with knowledge and skills to expand their life choices and help them to realize their potential. Insurgency in Adamawa state and parts of Nigeria's north-east directly challenges young people's learning opportunities, as many schools have shut down. Reduced schooling for the region's large youth population could worsen the unemployment and poverty rates, accentuating instability. Through its "Radio School" project, South Saharan seeks to use the power of the radio to improve adolescents' learning outcomes by providing high quality, curriculum-based lessons in basic science, civic education, English, and math for junior secondary school pupils in Adamawa and Enugu states. The project builds upon South Saharan's existing education program in Enugu state and demonstrate the viability of interactive radio instruction in Adamawa state.
