A Red Orchid Theatre, founded in 1993, produces contemporary plays from all over the world and revives older works in new ways. It is a leading Chicago storefront company with shows that regularly sell out. The company produces 3 to 4 full theatrical productions each season. It operates an incubation program for established and emerging artists to rehearse, critique, discuss, and produce new works; and its Youth Ensemble writes and performs its own plays. Its 70-seat storefront venue is located in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood, where it serves an audience of 4,000 each season. A MacArthur Award recognizes organizations that have impactful programs, that are well-managed, and that are at an inflection point, where they are likely to grow either in size or influence. A Red Orchid Theatre will allocate most of the Award to a cash reserve; it will use a smaller portion to implement its audience development plan.
