Established in 2014, the Surge Institute (Surge) is dedicated to addressing issues of race and class in urban education through leadership advancement, technical assistance, and advocacy. Its mission is to develop and elevate leaders of color who create transformative change in urban education. Surge fulfills its mission through its signature program, the Surge Fellowship, which brings together African-American and Latinx education leaders each year. With this award, Surge builds and sustains its Chicago Surge Fellowship program and its growing network of Fellowship alumni.

Launched in Chicago in 2015, the Surge Fellowship program has now been replicated in Oakland and Kansas City with plans for further national expansion. This award enables Surge Chicago to build and sustain its local Surge Fellowship program and its growing network of Fellowship Alumni.
