Color of Change Education Fund

Color of Change Education Fund (Color of Change) is the nation’s largest online racial justice organization. It was formed in 2005 in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in order to use online resources to strengthen the political voice of African Americans. Today, it uses both in-person and online tools and strategies to engage African Americans in shaping culture, policies and institutions to better reflect and respond to the needs of their communities, with a special focus on criminal justice reform, economic and media justice, and efforts to build the political influence of Black Americans. This general operating support grant enables Color of Change to engage its national membership of more than 7 million to use the power of its collective voice to hold corporate and political leaders accountable, respond to racial injustices, and help create a more equitable and inclusive American democracy.

Its national membership of 1.4 million is using the power of their collective voices to respond to racial injustices and build more accurate and nuanced narratives about the Black American experience. This grant supports the scaling of a new initiative to engage thousands of Black women across the country in civic and political activities, and elevate their leadership in combating negative stereotypes and unjust policies that work to marginalize and disadvantage Black Americans.

Color of Change is the nation’s largest online racial justice organization, motivating decision-makers in corporations and government to create a more human and less hostile world for Black people in America. This grant supports Color Of Change to participate in a national convening of participatory civic media organizations supported through MacArthur’s Journalism and Media program. The meeting is designed to help coalesce the emerging field of participatory civic media, of which Color Of Change is part, by facilitating new connections and collaborations and building a shared sense of identity among a new breed of media and culture organizations using participatory media to amplify historically marginalized voices and strengthen American democracy.
