The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) was established by the Compulsory, Free Universal Basic Education and Other Related Matters Act of 2004 with a mandate to formulate policy guidelines for the successful operation of the Universal Basic Education Program, prescribe the minimum standards for basic education in Nigeria, and ensure effective monitoring of standards. With this award, UBEC is improving transparency and accountability in basic education funding by scaling up Open Contracting Data systems in state basic education boards, training UBEC staff and state education boards on corruption prevention strategies, monitoring implementation of state basic education projects, and improving the management systems at state and national levels as a corruption prevention strategy. The award is expected to result in better utilization of basic education allocations throughout the states and reduce opportunities for corruption.
