The University of Zurich pursues excellence in research and teaching and delivers services to the general public. The Internet Use & Society division housed within the University’s Department of Communications and Media Research conducts and disseminates cutting-edge research about people’s digital media uses, and in particular how socioeconomic differences translate into differentiated skills and uses, and how variations in skills and uses have divergent implications for people’s life chances. The award provides flexible support to the Internet Use & Society division to study older adults’ uses of the internet. Examples of topics to be explored through this work include attitudes and experiences with privacy and security, the use of online services, and users’ understandings of how online systems such as algorithmic content delivery systems work. The outcome of this work will be a greater understanding of older adults’ internet uses that will be useful to scholars who study people’s digital media uses, as well as policymakers and organizations that work with older adults.
