The Connected Learning Lab (CLL) is dedicated to studying and mobilizing learning technologies in equitable, innovative, and learner-centered ways. Located at the University of California, Irvine, the CLL supports interdisciplinary research and design, and partnerships with a broad network of educational practitioners and technologists. This grant will support the CLL’s first annual Connected Learning Summit, a national convening of leading reserachers, educators and developers harnessing emerging technologies to expand access to participatory, playful and creative learning. The summit represents a merger between three community events with this shared vision and values: the Digital Media and Leanring Conference, which MacArthur helped to establish, the Games+Learning+Society Conference, an academic conference focused on the social significance of game culture, and Sandbox summit, which focused on the health and well-being of young people in Canada. The Connected Learning Summit is a collaboration between UC Irvine and the Media Lab at the MIT. It will be held August 1-3 at the MIT Media Lab.

The University of California Humanities Research Institute is a multi-campus research unit of the University of California’s Office of the President. It is the home of the Digital Media and Learning Research Hub (the Hub), which was established by MacArthur in 2009 to advance knowledge, research, and innovation at the intersection of digital media and learning. It now sustains a community of academics, practitioners, activists and others committed to advancing the ideas and practices of Connected Learning, a pedagogical approach that emerged from Hub research and embraces the use of educational technology to advance learning. As MacArthur exits the field of digital media and learning, this grant provides support to archive core Hub research and community assets, to facilitate the adoption and use of Connected Learning research instruments and original data sets, and to provide the runway needed to ensure sustainability of the Connected Learning research community.

The University of California Humanities Research Institute is a multi-campus research unit of the University of California. In 2002, the Institute joined with Duke University to co-found the Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Advanced Collaboratory (HASTAC), an informal, voluntary consortium of more than 80 institutions whose purpose is to develop new technologies and understand their implications for individuals and societies. This grant will support the University of California Irvine , through HASTAC, to administer the final phase of the 5th Digital Media and Learning Competition and to carry out the full 6th competition, which will focus on bringing proven Connected Learning activities to scale, through LRNG and other platforms. This final competition also will help develop a community of practitioners expert in creating playlists, a key feature of the LRNG platform that allows learners to develop their own pathways to exploring interests and developing expertise.

The Crossroads study is an ongoing longitudinal investigation of how court involvement and its sanctions versus diversion from formal processing by the juvenile justice system affect the development of first-time juvenile offenders following an arrest. Under the direction of Professor Elizabeth Cauffman, the study has followed youth ages 13 to 17 years old for three years to understand the effects of formal versus informal processing on the desistance from crime and the underlying psychological, social, and developmental factors that influence the trajectory. This award supports following the youth for an additional two years, at which point all youths will be 18 years or older and making the transition to adult roles and responsibilities. The findings can help inform the development of policy and practice guidelines and tools to help juvenile justice policymakers and practitioners make decisions about how to hold youthful offenders accountable, treat them fairly, and prevent re-offending, while saving the taxpayer dollar.

The University of California Humanities Research Institute is the home of the Digital Media and Learning Research Hub, which was established to integrate, sustain, and advance knowledge, research, and innovation in the emerging field of digital media and learning. Dr. David Goldberg, director of the Institute, and Dr. Mizuko Ito, chair of the MacArthur Research Network on Connected Learning, lead the field-defining Hub. This grant provides continued support for the Hub to conduct a range of field-building activities, including hosting an annual international conference and establishing strategic partnerships with other research, policy, and practice centers.

Since 2011, University of California Irvine has hosted the Connected Learning Research Network, a group of nationally-recognized scholars from a variety of disciplines - including education, game design, anthropology, psychology, sociology, and economics - dedicated to advancing the emerging field of digital media and learning through interdisciplinary research. This grant funds the Network’s second phase, in which it will test and refine the theoretical framework for Connected Learning by establishing a series of research projects that examine how, when implemented, Connected Learning may (or may not) advance successful preparation for college, work, and civic engagement.
