The Foundations of Machine Learning Lab (the Lab) at the University of California, Berkeley, studies algorithmic and architectural building blocks of decision systems that learn from experience and the impacts such decisions have on human wellbeing. The award supports the Lab’s Algorithm Auditing Project, which seeks to advance the execution and design of effective evaluations of algorithmic deployments that can factor into meaningful processes of accountability. The primary activities of the Algorithm Auditing Project include: (1) publishing algorithm audit case studies to illustrate ideal methodologies that leverage novel and existing processes and tools; (2) developing practical resources for practitioners across a range of contexts for educational and implementation support; and (3) purposing actionable guidance and recommendations for civil society, policymakers, and advocacy organizations seeking to shape policy and regulation for algorithmic accountability.
