The award supports the establishment of the AI Accountability Lab (the Lab) within the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College Dublin. The Lab’s mission is to advance research that keeps technology corporations and other powerful actors in the artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem accountable and ensures AI technologies serve the public, with a special focus on marginalized people. Through rigorous, interdisciplinary, groundbreaking research, the Lab aims to advance scientific evidence in service of justice, equity, and accountability. There are three interrelated goals that animate the work of the Lab: (1) Diagnose and uncover failures, harms, and structural inequalities that exist within AI systems through rigorous public interest audits; (2) Advance AI policymaking and practice that is informed by rigorous interdisciplinary research; and (3) Establish conceptual and methodological frameworks for justice-oriented AI audits grounded in interdisciplinary analysis. The Lab will produce academic research, empirically grounded information to inform policymaking, and public public commentary.
To create a joint Masters in Development Practice degree program with University College Dublin (over 42 months).
