The Lenfest Institute for Journalism works to strengthen journalism in Philadelphia and across the country and promotes business solutions to sustain public service local journalism. In March 2022, it is convening a Local News Summit in partnership with the Aspen Institute’s Aspen Digital. The Summit gathers 60 representatives from local news, philanthropy, technology, and public policy to galvanize a growing movement to revitalize and resource local journalism. The goal of the convening is to develop consensus and a pact for collective action across five areas: designing local news with the audience and equity at the forefront, healing polarized communities and addressing mis- and disinformation, fostering greater collaboration through news tools and systems, expanding and diversifying revenue models for journalism, and advocating for public policies that support local journalism. This grant supports convening costs and post-convening reports and advocacy efforts.
