Network of European Foundations

Civitates is a donor pooled fund within the Network of European Foundations focused on defending and promoting democracy in Europe. The award supports Civitates’ Sub Fund for Tech and Democracy, which focuses on the impact of technology on public discourse and democratic practices. It provides grants to civil society organizations in select countries working to advance national-level enforcement of the Digital Services Act (DSA) and other European Union (EU) technology regulations. In addition, the Sub Fund for Tech and Democracy provides grants to organizations working at the EU or cross-country level on technology regulation, while also supporting related field building efforts. Through the Sub Fund on Tech and Democracy, Civitates provides financial support, creates connections, and enables learning so that national-level civil society organizations, researchers, and technical partners can support the enforcement of the DSA and other EU technology regulations.

The Network of European Foundations seeks to increase philanthropic impact by providing a space for collaboration, learning and regranting through donor collaborative projects. The award provides flexible support to the European AI & Society Fund (the Fund), a project of the Network of European Foundations. The Fund seeks to advance a diverse and resilient ecosystem of civil society organizations to inform policy around artificial intelligence (AI) in Europe and galvanize the philanthropic sector to sustain this vital work.
