The grant supports research by an international team of experts of the new social and economic challenges faced by resource-abundant Arctic regions. The project will focus on two Russian oil and gas producing areas and apply to them the experience accumulated so far in Greenland and Canada. The project team will also work to promote constructive engagement on the ground among all stakeholders, including self-organized communities, experts, activists, and public authorities.

This grant will support the Russian operations of the Working Group on the Future of U.S.-Russia Relations, a consortium of about twenty younger leading experts from both countries anchored by the Higher School of Economics in Moscow and the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University. The Working Group produces jointly written policy papers on thorny issues in the bilateral relationship, meets twice yearly, and disseminates its findings broadly among experts and policymakers in both countries. MacArthur funds will support meeting costs and the production and launch of Working Group reports.
