Press Forward

The Miami Foundation (TMF) is the community foundation of greater Miami, serving as a civic leader and convener, providing philanthropic services to donors, and investing in the community. It is the fiscal sponsor for Press Forward, a philanthropic collaboration aimed at raising significant new resources for local news. TMF is responsible for the overall Press Forward campaign, coordination, and collaboration, and will house and manage the pooled fund. This grant is MacArthur's contribution to the pooled fund, of which 5 percent will be allocated to administrative expenses.

NewsMatch

The Miami Foundation (TMF) is the community foundation for the greater Miami area and also a leading fiscal sponsor for regional and national philanthropic projects, including NewsMatch. NewsMatch is a funder collaboration that incentivizes individual donors to support their local nonprofit news outlets. Created in 2016, NewsMatch funders have contributed more than $25 million, which has helped nonprofit newsrooms around the country raise $246 million in community support. NewsMatch is a key contributor to helping nonprofit newsrooms build community awareness and donor engagement. This grant will augment the NewsMatch fund. The intended goal of this grant is to create a larger leverage opportunity for local newsrooms to raise financial support from their communities.

Internet and Platform Researcher First Amendment Support Fund

The Miami Foundation is the community foundation of greater Miami, serving as a civic leader and convener, providing philanthropic services to donors, and investing in the community. The Internet and Platform Researcher First Amendment Support Fund (the Fund), a project of the Miami Foundation, facilitates legal support for researchers at universities, research institutes, and charitable organizations who are seeking legal advice concerning First Amendment-protected research about the internet and digital platforms. The award provides flexible support to the Fund.

Launched in September 2023, Press Forward is galvanizing local and national donors to ensure that Americans, regardless of where they live, can have access to reliable and fact-based news and information. For donors, Press Forward is designed to provide multiple modes of participation, accelerate the pace of philanthropy, and create opportunities for peer learning. This grant supports the start-up and ongoing management costs associated with launching Press Forward and building the staff, systems, and processes that will power the initiative.

The Miami Foundation is a community foundation focused on civic leadership, community investment and philanthropy for the greater Miami area. Its project, the Fund for Nonprofit News, administers News Match, a matching gifts program designed to catalyze new funding for nonprofit newsrooms. This award supports 2017 News Match, which provides matching funds for any new donations up to $1,000 made to U.S.-based nonprofit newsrooms that are members of the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN). The intended outcome of News Match is to strengthen the mostly small, local and regional organizations that are filling the widening gap in accurate and high quality accountability and explanatory journalism around the country.
