The Maynard Institute for Journalism Education (Maynard) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the accuracy and responsiveness of the journalism industry by providing trainings to newsrooms, and professional development to individual journalists, editors, and journalism entrepreneurs. Maynard’s trainings help newsrooms acknowledge and overcome challenges of difference across race, class, geography, gender, and generation, to improve the accuracy of their work and better serve diverse audiences. This grant supports Maynard’s general operations, and the intended outcomes are a robust set of opportunities for journalists of color to advance their careers, and for newsrooms to take necessary steps to become more responsive to the communities they serve.
The Maynard Institute works with newsrooms to address the persistent lack of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the field of journalism. The Institute offers workshops and training sessions to help newsroom leaders and staff identify, address and remedy policies and practices that reinforce systemic racism. It also trains and supports journalists of color to be change agents within their news organizations and to ascend to positions of power. The Institute’s expertise and contributions have been widely recognized in recent years, leading to numerous project grants; this grant provides general operating support to fund core operations and provide flexibility for the Maynard Institute to carry out its priorities.
