IllumiNative is a new Native-led organization established to increase the visibility of Native Nations and peoples in American society. It grew out of findings from a research initiative that explored opportunities to transform how the American public and its institutions perceive, portray, and engage with Native peoples and their communities. This grant provides general operating support to IllumiNative to build power for Native peoples by amplifying contemporary Native voices, stories, and issues to advance justice, equity, and self-determination.
IllumiNative is a Native-led nonprofit organization established to increase the visibility of Native Nations and peoples in American society. It uses the media and popular culture to build power for Native peoples by amplifying contemporary Native voices, stories, and issues to advance justice, equity, and self-determination. This grant provides support to IllumiNative to host the Indigenous House at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where the work of Native filmmakers and creatives will be celebrated as part of three days of programmed panel discussions, filmmaker talks, exhibits, and performances. Now in its second year, the Indigenous House was established by IllumiNative to create a space where Native and non-Native peoples can come together in community, learn from one another, acknowledge the barriers Native peoples have overcome and still face in the film industry while also celebrating the Native films premiering at Sundance and opportunities to bring more Native stories, talent, and voices to national and global audiences.
