The Hyde Park Art Center (HPAC) is an exhibition, education, and collaboration organization in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago whose mission is to sustain the visual arts in the city by supporting new and established artists. It also creates opportunities for arts-related learning and dialogue through numerous events annually, such as artist talks and film screenings. The HPAC is free and open to the public seven days a week, serving 45,000 artists, visitors, and audience members each year. This award provides general operating support to the HPAC as part of the Foundation’s Culture, Equity, and the Arts program.

The Hyde Park Art Center, founded in 1939, provides visual arts activities, including classes, exhibitions, lectures, and discussions, to Hyde Park and surrounding South Side community residents of all ages. The Hyde Park Art Center is one of the nation’s leading community art centers, providing classes for the community and showcasing Chicago’s emerging contemporary artists. A MacArthur Award recognizes organizations that have excellent programs, that are well-managed, and that are at an inflection point, where they are likely to grow either in size or influence. Hyde Park Art Center will allocate most of its award to a cash reserve; a smaller portion will support activities related to broadening access to the Art Center.

It offers classes, exhibitions, and events for the public. This funding is recommended in support of the Hyde Park Art Center's exchange with France's Regional Centre of Photography. The goal of the exchange is to enable artists from Chicago and France to create new film or photographic artwork outside of their own country, which will be exhibited in both countries following completion of the exchange. This grant funds direct project expenses: travel, accommodations, artistic materials, artist and studio fees, administration, documentation, and marketing. It is recommended as part of the International Connections Fund.
