The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York (CUNY) trains new journalists and houses several centers that seek to advance public interest journalism. Established in February 2023, the Journalism Protection Initiative (JPI) is a center within the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism whose goal is to ensure that journalists in the U.S. and around the world can operate safely and that the information they produce reaches the communities they serve. This grant supports the JPI’s Safety Summit, a one-day event aimed at creating practical solutions to threats facing journalists and press freedom. The intended outcome of the Summit is to improve coordination and collaboration among the various stakeholders within the journalism industry to create a stronger safety infrastructure for the field.
The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism (Newmark J-School) at the City University of New York (CUNY) trains new journalists, helps mid-career journalists retool their skills, and partners with other media organizations to find new paths to excellence. The Newmark J-School hosts centers advancing and strengthening the industry, including the Center for Community Media (CCM). This grant supports CCM’s work on charitable and educational outcomes by supporting more programs and trainings for community media outlets across the United States.
The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism CUNY Foundation, Inc. aims to train new journalists from varied backgrounds to help diversify the journalism industry and create more public interest journalism. Within the Graduate School, the Center for Community Media (CCM) serves as a hub for resources and training aimed at increasing essential news coverage for underserved populations. The Asian Media Initiative is one of several programs within the CCM that works to support and strengthen community media outlets serving target communities. This grant provides project support for the Election Reporting Initiative, which seeks to support small and under-resourced Asian American news outlets in addressing the spread of mis/disinformation, particularly in the lead up to the Fall 2024 elections.
