Chalkbeat is a nonprofit news organization that covers educational change efforts in local communities and represents one of the successful new models of high impact journalism in the digital age. Its founder and CEO, Elizabeth Green, is also a co-founder of the American Journalism Project and a recognized leader in the nonprofit journalism field. With MacArthur support and the support of other journalism funders, Chalkbeat is leading a year-long effort – comprised of research, focus groups, and convenings – that will culminate in a Future of Local News Roadmap. The goal of the Roadmap is to make the case for the vital role that local news plays in preserving American democracy and to raise unprecedented resources from the private and public sectors for local journalism. MacArthur funds support staff time of the Chalkbeat team as well as additional researchers, consultants, and facilitators hired for the project. Funds also support the cost of a January 2023 convening.
