MediaJustice is a national nonprofit based in Oakland, CA, whose mission is to build and strengthen a grassroots movement for a more just and participatory media in the digital age. Launched in 2009 in response to the threats that media consolidation posed to immigrants and communities of color, today MediaJustice develops educational resources and runs a range of training programs and public education campaigns for, and in collaboration with, its network of more than 100 grassroots social justice, media, and arts organizations. This X-Grant supports a multi-media project that will be developed in collaboration with community members and will tell the story of the rise, fall, and resurgence of multi-racial, working-class organizing in Chicago from the 1980s to the present. Its goal is to educate and mobilize Chicagoans to contribute to and support state and local media and technology policies that can lead to more equitable city and region.

Launched in 2009 in response to the threats that media consolidation posed to immigrants and communities of color, today MediaJustice develops educational resources and runs a range of training programs and public education campaigns for, and in collaboration with, its network of more than 100 grassroots social justice, media, and arts organizations. This grant provides general support to MediaJustice to expand its network and carry out programming to build a broader grassroots base able to advocate for a safer and more equitable internet. This includes support for a new “train the trainer” effort to build the capacity of grassroots organizations to combat racialized disinformation at the local level and to pilot a new multimedia project to educate the American public on a range media and technology issues that impact their lives.

Center for Media Justice  is the leading national network of grassroots media justice organizations and advocates representing the interests of immigrants and communities of color on a range of issues, from net neutrality to the individual policies and procedures of large technology companies, such as Google, Amazon, and Facebook. It was founded by and is currently run by people of color. This proposed grant provides general operating support for Center for Media Justice to help build the resiliency of communities of color to fend off disinformation designed to undermine their participation in the 2020 elections.

The Center for Media Justice (recently renamed Media Justice) is an Oakland-based nonprofit that runs programming for, and hosts a national network of, advocates leading the fight for racial and economic equity in the digital age. It was launched in 2008 in response to the threats that media consolidation posed to immigrants and communities of color. More than ten years later, Media Justice is a leading national network of grassroots media justice organizations and advocates representing the interests of immigrants and communities of color on a range of issues, from net neutrality to the individual policies and procedures at major platform companies. This project grant supports Media Justice to keep pressure on large technology companies, including Facebook, Twitter and Google, to change corporate policies and practices that undermine the civil rights protections of immigrants and people of color, and to carry out programming to ensure communities most at risk for mis- and disinformation campaigns have the information and resources they need to stay safe, with a special focus on the 2020 Census and elections.
