The American Journalism Project (AJP) directs investments, coaching, and tactical support to the operations side of nonprofit or charitable newsrooms and works to help local nonprofit or charitable news outlets better serve their communities. This general operating grant supports AJP’s role as a funder and journalism support organization. With its latest fund, the AJP grows journalistic capacity in more communities, serves diverse community information needs, and builds resilience in nonprofit news.
Oklahoma Eagle
The American Journalism Project (AJP) has created and is the fiscal sponsor of the Tulsa Local News Initiative (TLNI), a nonprofit entity seeking 501(c)(3) status that has obtained all assets of The Oklahoma Eagle (Eagle), one of the nation’s oldest legacy Black newspapers. As a local news organization, TLNI is an independent nonprofit serving Tulsa with essential news and information that is centered on community needs and free to access for all. TLNI will launch and operate a new newsroom serving Tulsa and integrate and publish the Eagle, to provide a sustainable nonprofit home to one of the most storied Black newspapers in the country. Through its asset transfer to TLNI, the Eagle is in the process of transforming into a nonprofit, digital-first publication, ensuring the long-term viability of one of the nation’s oldest legacy Black newspapers. This grant will support the Eagle’s efforts to expand its journalistic reach by hiring additional full-time staff to educate the public on matters of importance to the Black community in Tulsa.
The American Journalism Project (AJP) is building sustainable and impactful local nonprofit news organizations that address the information gaps left by a declining news industry and restore the civic and accountability role of local journalism. Through direct investments, coaching, and tactical support to the business side of newsrooms, the American Journalism Project works to help local news outlets better serve their communities. This grant provides general operating support to the American Journalism Project with special emphasis on expanding AJP’s work in rural and underserved parts of the nation.
