Liyana is a documentary film about young students in Swaziland as they collectively write an original folktale under the leadership of acclaimed South African author and orator Gcina Mhlophe. The story is about the adventures of the fictional Liyana, a young girl who experiences and overcomes trauma similar to that of the students’ own lives. The students live and attend school at an orphanage and are among the more than 200,000 children in Swaziland growing up without parents in a country with the world’s highest rate of HIV/AIDS infection. A MacArthur grant will support costs associated with post-production.
