The American Institute of Architects established the AIA Foundation to improve public understanding of the role architects play in helping achieve healthy, safe, sustainable and livable conditions through design. Following a first Remaking Cities Conference held in Pittsburgh in 1988 that focused on the decline of industrial cities and regions in North America and Europe in preceding decades the AIA Foundation will use this grant to plan and host a second Remaking Cities Conference in October 2013 that will convene leading urban experts to discuss progress in revitalizing post-industrial cities on both sides of the Atlantic.
