Responding to shifts in the media environment and new opportunities, 100Reporters is undertaking a re-examination of its programmatic priorities. This grant supports general operations, and the intended outcomes are high caliber investigative reporting projects reaching wide audiences and deepening public understanding of underreported topics.

At a time when the First Amendment rights of reporters are under threat, the festival focuses on the challenges facing filmmakers and journalists, while offering a platform to support an exchange of ideas, knowledge, and skills. MacArthur funds provide flexible support for the Double Exposure Investigative Film Festival and Symposium.

As the only United States-based film festival dedicated to the intersection of investigative reporting and documentary cinema, Double Exposure raises awareness of the power of these truth-telling formats for an audience of journalists, D.C.-based policymakers and advocates, and the public. The MacArthur Foundation is one of the major foundations that funds the intersection of investigative reporting and documentary filmmaking. Supporting this event enables the Foundation and its grantees to learn more about these increasingly converging fields and the challenges facing them, and explore opportunities for greater collaboration.

The MacArthur Foundation Journalism and Media program was the lead sponsor of the inaugural Festival and Symposium in 2015, which exhibited important films, and convened high profile practitioners. The Festival is designed to raise awareness of the power of investigative storytelling through film, among both general audiences and policymakers. The Symposium, held concurrently, provides investigative reporters and filmmakers with opportunities to for learning and networking with one another.

100Reporters is a non-profit investigative reporting organization founded in 2012 by two former New York Times investigative reporters to provide a platform and structure for the work of freelance investigative journalists. 100Reporters works with in-country reporters and accomplished investigative journalists to expose corruption of all forms and to hold government and corporations accountable; it distributes these stories to a global audience through partner news outlets. 100Reporters is organizing the inaugural Investigative Film Festival, three days of public screenings and panel discussions, from September 30 - October 2,2015 in Washington, DC. The festival provides a forum through which the general public can view compelling fiction and documentary films that explore and showcase investigative reporting. It also will provide an opportunity for professional reporters to connect with one another and discuss the emerging challenges and opportunities in their fields.
