Nuclear deterrence theory has dominated nuclear weapons strategy for decades yet has not reduced nuclear risks. Nuclear weapons do not make people safer. A new Deterrence Research Network at the Managing the Atom Project—supported by MacArthur through our Nuclear Challenges capstone project—will take a critical look at the theory and investigate alternative strategies and approaches, convening scholars and practitioners of many perspectives.

With the launch of the network, we hope to foster critical thinking on nuclear deterrence and elevate alternative strategies that may better support international peace and security. New perspectives, insights, and analysis from the research network can help shift the dominant lens on nuclear weapons strategy.
