The Surge Institute is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to educate and develop leaders of color who create transformative change for young people, their families, and our broader communities. The biennial Surge Alumni Convening serves as a national gathering for nearly 300 graduates of Surge’s fellowship programs across flagship and academy sites, as well as staff, board members, Surge Faculty, and Friends of Surge. This X-Grant supports the biennial Surge Alumni Convening.

Its mission is to develop and elevate leaders of color who create transformative change in urban education. Surge fulfills its mission through its signature program, the Surge Fellowship, which brings together a new cohort of leaders of color in education annually for an intensive leadership development experience. With this award for general operating support, Surge Chicago maintains its Chicago Surge Fellowship program and builds its network of alumni.

Launched in Chicago in 2015, the Surge Fellowship program has now been replicated in Oakland and Kansas City with plans for further national expansion. This award enables Surge Chicago to build and sustain its local Surge Fellowship program and its growing network of Fellowship Alumni.
