2021 (3 years)
$1,500,000

Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) is a nonprofit “think-and-do” tank whose goal is to transform global energy use to create a clean, prosperous, and secure future. This includes work on major energy sectors and other critical areas that accelerate processes for the transition to clean energy, including mobility, power, buildings, urban areas, heavy industry, financial systems, and climate and energy data. The award assists RMI to work with key public and private stakeholder groups in Maharashtra and Karnataka in India to adopt holistic approaches to identify and deploy end-to-end solutions and to implement interventions that prioritize clean mobility transitions. It enables RMI to build on lessons from an earlier phase of support, which accelerated the process of rolling out electric mobility options in the cities of Pune and Bangalore.

2019 (3 years)

Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) is a nonprofit “think-and-do” tank whose goal is to transform global energy use to create a clean, prosperous, and secure future. For over a decade, RMI has had a constructive working relationship with China’s government and the nation’s most prestigious universities. This award supports RMI’s China office, which is engaged in several projects in partnership with key government agencies, along with leading domestic and international think tanks, university research centers, and experts, to expedite the implementation of reforms to the Chinese utility sector. The current work centers around (1) improving urban sustainability, with a focus on design, district-wide heating and cooling, and more efficient land use; (2) reforming the power sector to accommodate more diverse (i.e., renewable and storage) energy sources and regional market designs; and (3) electrification of the transportation sector, including freight, public transit, and other service vehicles.

2018 (2 years)
$1,000,000

Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) is a nonprofit “think-and-do” tank whose goal is to transform global energy use to create a clean, prosperous, and secure future. In November 2017, RMI launched the Urban Mobility Lab in India, a platform that supports a replicable process for identifying, integrating, and implementing mobility solutions in leading geographies, called Lighthouse Cities. The Lighthouse City concept was developed in collaboration with NITI Aayog, the Government of India's leading policy think tank, and Pune, Maharashtra was selected as the first Lighthouse City in June 2018. The award is supporting RMI’s leadership in developing and scaling the work of the Urban Mobility Lab over the next two years. RMI expects to announce a second Lighthouse City in 2019 and anticipates that the Urban Mobility Lab will be able to unlock an 18-month scaling pathway for mobility solutions in new cities. The experiences and lessons are being used to guide and accelerate the scaling of mobility solutions through central, state, and city governments, as well as the private sectors in India.
