Federal Competition & Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) is a body established by the Nigerian government to protect and promote the rights of consumers and hold producers and service providers accountable. A previous grantee of the On Nigeria program, FCCPC is using this renewed support to expand its consumer empowerment and mobilization outreach, and strengthen advocacy and accountability in the interface between electricity distribution companies and consumers in Nigeria’s power sector. FCCPC is educating consumers about their rights through town hall meetings, stakeholder dialogues, and media shows on radio, television, and social media. FCCPC is collaborating with customer relations officers and marketing officers in service provider companies on a whistleblower initiative against extortion faced by unmetered households and business consumers, and to reduce the risk of bribery. Finally, it is promoting collaborative problem solving and coordination in the power sector by expanding its automated consumer complaints and feedback system. The project is part of On Nigeria’s work to promote accountability in Nigeria’s electricity distribution sector.
