The Christchurch Call Foundation (the Foundation) is the nongovernment organization that coordinates the Christchurch Call’s mission to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online through multi-stakeholder action. The Christchurch Call was launched in 2019 by the governments of New Zealand and France with leaders from government, industry, and civil society in response to the tragic terrorist attack against two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, on March 15, 2019. More than 50 governments and the European Commission, and dozens of technology companies and civil society actors compose the Christchurch Call Community. The organization has four priority areas: (1) building the Christchurch Call Community, which is focused on continuing to expand and strengthen the multi-stakeholder effort; (2) developing interventions, focused on understanding the role of algorithms in online radicalization, and to keep users safe; (3) responding to crises, to quickly coordinate and prevent the spread of terrorist and violent extremist content online in real time through mobilizing members of the Christchurch Call Community; and, (4) ensuring greater transparency of government and online service providers about the processes they follow and decisions they make about content moderation. In addition, the organization addresses issues of relevance across all of its priority areas, such as addressing the impacts of artificial intelligence. The award provides general operating support to the Foundation.
