Launched on the 25th anniversary of the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Disability Lead is designed to fully engage individuals with disabilities in civic life. It encourages disabled persons in the Chicago metropolitan area to serve in elected and appointed positions, on boards, and in other roles that advance equal opportunity. With this award, Disability Lead offers its Leadership Institute to 16-20 emerging leaders each year; implements a program designed to increase the number of persons with disabilities serving in public service positions; and integrates foci on racial equity and disability justice throughout its work.
