Out of State follows native Hawaiian inmates who are sent to a private prison in Arizona. The film also follows the experiences of their families back home in Hawaii, thousands of miles away. In response to their displacement, a group of over 100 native Hawaiian male inmates practice hula in the prison¹s recreation yard, a means of maintaining their cultural heritage and working to rehabilitate their relationships with their families.
