Locked in the hold of a flimsy boat and forced by the Gaddafi army to leave their children behind, Grace and Frank, originally from Nigeria, survive the dangerous crossing from Libya to a minuscule Italian island that has become the front line for migrants fleeing the upheavals in North Africa. But the same West that greatly sup- ported the Arab Spring is beaten by a ferocious economic crisis and is not willing to take in immigrants. In the Middle puts a human face on the tens of thousands of migrants who risk their lives to reach the small Italian island of Lampedusa, the gateway to crisis-hit Europe, unaware of the ferocious economic downturn the West is undergoing and of its rising anti-immigrant populism.
