Daniel J. Socolow
Director, Fellows Program

Daniel J. Socolow has been Director of the MacArthur Fellows Program since 1997.

Before coming to the Foundation, he was president of the Socolow Group, Senior Advisor and Director of Programs in the Jimmy Carter Presidential Center, President of the American University of Paris, and Vice President of Spelman College.

He holds a B.A. from the University of Wisconsin, an M.A. from Harvard University, a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and a DHL from the American University of Paris.


Mark D. Fitzsimmons

Mark Fitzsimmons is Associate Director of the MacArthur Fellows Program.  Prior to joining the Foundation in 1996, Fitzsimmons served on the faculty in the Department of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.  He holds a B.S. in Philosophy from the University of Michigan, an M.S. and Ph.D. in Anatomy from the University of Rochester, and an M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University.  He is currently a member of the Board on Life Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences.


Mary Ann T. Worklan

Mary Ann Worklan is a Senior Program Officer in the Fellows Program.  Prior to coming to the Foundation in 1985, Worklan served as Associate Director of the New York Institute for the Humanities at New York University. While in New York, she also worked at Human Rights Watch and in the European Paintings Department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Worklan has an M.A. in English from Northwestern University, with a specialty in contemporary and Victorian British literature.


Marlies A. Carruth

Marlies Carruth is a Program Officer in the Fellows Program.

After more than a decade with First National Bank of Chicago and Leo Burnett, Carruth turned her energies toward the creative arts and community development. As an independent film producer and director, she produced concept pieces, short films, and a feature-length movie, each exploring important contemporary social issues. In addition, Carruth co-founded Indie Day, a national grassroots film festival for cable television.

Carruth received her B.A. in Political Economy from Williams College and her M.B.A. from the University of Chicago, with a concentration in Finance.


Laura E. Scholl
Program Officer

Laura Scholl is a Program Officer in the Fellows Program. Prior to joining the Foundation in 2003 as a Program Associate, Scholl served as Assistant Director of Development at the Arts & Business Council of Chicago. While attending graduate school at the University of Chicago, she also worked as a research and communications assistant at the University's Harris School for Public Policy. Scholl received a B.A. from Lawrence University and an interdisciplinary M.A. in Religion and Literature from the University of Chicago.


Christina Lovely
Program Associate, Fellows Program

Christina Lovely is a Program Associate in the Fellows Program. Prior to joining the Foundation in 2006, she served as Program Coordinator for the University of Chicago’s Master of Arts Program in the Humanities. She received a B.A. in English and Political Science from the University of Notre Dame and an M.A. in Humanities from the University of Chicago.


Krista Pospisil
Senior Information Specialist

Krista Pospisil is a Senior Information Specialist in the Fellows Program. Prior to coming to the Foundation in 2002, she worked for the Soros Foundation's Open Society Fund in both Czechoslovakia and in the Czech Republic. Pospisil has an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Kansas and an M.S. in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
