In this commentary, UN Special Representative for Migration and Development Peter Sutherland urges OECD countries to adapt policies more friendly to immigrants . Sutherland notes a recent stall in migration to the U.S. and Europe and argues that shelving anti-immigrant rhetoric and embracing diversity is crucial for nations hoping to maintain their workforces as large amounts of baby boomers retire in the coming years.

The International Organization for Migration published the MacArthur-supported World Migration Report 2011: Communicating Effectively about Migration, which recommends a fundamental shift in the way people communicate about migration. The study calls for an informed and transparent political and public debate in order to benefit from the diversity that results from migration; outlines the risks of maintaining the status quo; and includes a review of migration trends and major migration policy issues in 2010/2011.

For five years, MacArthur has been the largest non-governmental donor to the Global Forum on Migration and Development, helping to ensure broad participation by civil society groups at this annual gathering of more than 140 governments. Continuing its support for efforts to improve the governance of international migration, MacArthur announced four new grants totaling over $1 million.

Member States and Observers of the United Nations will gather in Geneva, Switzerland on December 1-2, 2011 to participate in the Global Forum on Migration & Development’s 2011 Concluding Debate. Participants will discuss the results and conclusions of some 14 thematic meetings around the world under the central theme, “Taking Action on Migration and Development – Coherence, Capacity and Cooperation.” MacArthur is the largest nongovernmental donor to the Global Forum on Migration and Development, which is an annual gathering of more than 140 governments aimed at encouraging international cooperation to increase the benefits of migration.

The UN General Assembly convened their first Informal Thematic Debate on International Migration and Development to take stock of achievements to date; learn from effective policies and practices that promote migration’s positive contributions to development; and discuss solutions to obstacles that reduce the benefits of migration. The Global Forum on Migration and Development – of which MacArthur is the largest non-governmental supporter – was widely recognized for its role in spurring greater discussion on migration among rich, poor, and middle-income countries, and for helping create many policy innovations and new forms of international cooperation around the world.

The Secretary of State’s Office of Global Partnerships hosted a Global Diaspora Forum – built-on the Diaspora Networks Alliance framework for leveraging diaspora resources for effective development and diplomacy – to unleash the potential of these communities. The Forum and the Alliance were informed by a body of MacArthur-supported work on the contributions of migrants and diasporas to home-country development, in particular, the work of MacArthur grantee and Forum co-organizer, the Migration Policy Institute. The African Diaspora Policy Centre, another MacArthur grantee, was also featured at the Forum. Watch the opening event »
