MacArthur Fellows Program
1981-2011
Each year, the MacArthur Foundation selects between 20-30 recipients for the five-year, $500,000 MacArthur Fellowship. Between June 1981 and September 2011, 850 Fellows have been named from a range of disciplines. Past recipients have been writers, scientists, artists, social scientists, humanists, teachers, entrepreneurs, farmers, and fishermen, among many others. Browse Fellows by Area
You may browse a list organizing current and previous recipients of the MacArthur Fellowship based on areas of principal focus. However, it is intended solely to provide a sense of the range and breadth of their activities collectively. The selection process considers each nominee's creative efforts as a whole, not just with respect to their contributions to a particular discipline or field. Because MacArthur Fellows often cross disciplinary boundaries, readers should not interpret a specific entry as fully descriptive or infer that nominees are chosen on the basis of their fit within any of the categories on this list. There is no such thing as a MacArthur Fellow “in” a specific field.
