General Program

Intellectual Property and the Public Domain

The General Program is in the final year of its time-limited initiative on intellectual property and the long-term protection of the public domain. This initiative was begun in 2002 as a short-term project to support new models, policy analysis, and public education designed to bring about balance between public and private interests concerning intellectual property rights in a digital era. The Foundation’s goal was to stimulate public discussion about intellectual property laws, treaties and regulations; create new models of legal sharing of scientific and cultural materials; and promote thinking and discussion about alternative laws, regulations and practices that would be more effective in a digital environment.

In this final year of the initiative, the Foundation will not be accepting new proposals. Instead, the focus will be on providing final grants to conclude funded projects, and in planning an evaluation of the initiative.
