Mamta-Health Institute for Mother and Child

MAMTA-Institute for Mother and Child, a NGO based in Delhi, implements an intervention in four districts in the northern states of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh that focuses on strengthening the capacity of various cadres of health care providers in providing services, ranging from contraceptive counselling and supplies to pregnancy related and postpartum care, to married young women with the aim of enabling young couples to postpone their first pregnancy, prepare for their first delivery, and adopt best practices related to pregnancy, delivery, postpartum and newborn care and subsequent birth spacing. MAMTA works closely with the national and state governments, and the intervention is intended to strengthen the government's strategy to delay the first birth and make pregnancy safer among married girls and young women. The Population Council is evaluating the acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness of this model at the levels of both providers and married young women and girls.
