Feet in 2 Worlds

Feet in 2 Worlds, a fiscally sponsored project of the Institute for Nonprofit News, is an independent news outlet and training organization dedicated to elevating and supporting the work of journalists from immigrant backgrounds through the production of podcasts, workshops, and a fellowship program for reporters and editors. As its founder and executive director plans his retirement and Feet in 2 Worlds prepares to become an independent 501c3 organization, the Board is undertaking a succession planning process through a facilitated retreat, which this grant supports. The intended outcome is a plan for new leadership of Feet in 2 Worlds that will continue its mission and bring new perspectives on the immigrant experience to the organization.

The Institute for Nonprofit News (INN) is a membership organization that supports and advocates for the growth and sustainability of the nonprofit news sector; it has a network of over 400 local to global, topic-specific, and investigative nonprofit news organizations and over 3,000 practitioners dedicated to public service journalism. The Rural News Network, a project of INN, is a consortium of nearly 60 nonprofit newsrooms that collaborate to provide more accurate and comprehensive reporting on rural America. This grant enables INN's Rural News Network to deepen and expand editorial collaborations among the participating newsrooms. The intended outcome of this work is to increase the accessibility of news and information for rural communities; elevate stories which have been underrepresented regionally and nationally; and strengthen the sustainability of newsrooms serving rural communities.

It provides business, technology, legal and other relevant training for news entrepreneurs; fiscal sponsorship for nascent news operations; and opportunities for peer-learning, information sharing, and reporting collaborations. It also advocates for the field among funders, assists the field in addressing industry-wide challenges, and negotiates on behalf of its members with service providers. INN’s services and activities contribute to the growth and success of the nonprofit news community. This grant enables INN to operate at a capacity commensurate with the demand for its services in the field. The outcome of this work is a stronger network of nonprofit newsrooms better equipped to serve the information needs of the American public.

Feet in 2 Worlds

The Institute for Nonprofit News (INN) is a nonprofit organization that supports more than 200 independent nonprofit news organizations across the United States with professional development, collaboration opportunities, and fiscal sponsorship. INN serves as the fiscal sponsor for Feet in 2 Worlds (Fi2W), which provides a platform for immigrant journalists and journalists of color to develop their skills, produce multimedia reporting, incubate special projects to reach under-served immigrant communities, and distribute their work widely. Fi2W offers paid reporting and editing fellowships as well as skill-building workshops, and it produces a podcast to feature the work of its network of first- and second-generation immigrant journalists. This grant provides flexible support to Fi2W. The intended outcome is a stronger set of supports for immigrant journalists and journalists of color to build their careers and contribute to greater cultural competency of news organizations to serve diverse communities.

The Institute for Nonprofit News (INN) is a national membership organization supporting the growing set of nonprofit news organizations in the United States. It provides a mix of direct services, training programs, and field-building activities to strengthen the nonprofit and independent news sector. In six years, the organization has grown from 20 to over 120 members. This award provides general operating support to INN as it deepens its role as a critical resource for both start-up and more mature nonprofit newsrooms.
