Women’s Refugee Commission (WRC) of the International Rescue Committee is a research and advocacy organization that works to improve the lives and well being of displaced and conflict-affected women, children and youth around the world. The goal of this grant is to ensure that crisis-affected populations in the Great Lakes region of Africa have safe access to appropriate, sustainable, cooking fuel and fuel efficient cooking technologies. Project staff will assess current needs and challenges related to access to sustainable cooking fuel in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) sites and refugee camps in seven countries within the Great Lakes region, with a focus on implications for the environment and the safety of women and children. WRC will then implement a strategy for safe access to sustainable cooking fuel in two IDP sites in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and a refugee site in southwest Uganda.
